Shrink-Wrap or Heated Indoor? Great Lakes Winter Storage, Costed

Five months on the hard is the largest single line in a northern boating budget, and the cheapest option is not always the one that costs least.

From roughly the first week of November to the last week of April, a boat in Michigan is not a boat. It is a stored asset with a bill attached, and that bill is usually the largest single line in a northern ownership budget after insurance.

The choice is not really shrink-wrap versus indoor. It is how much freeze-thaw cycling you are willing to buy.

How much does boat winter storage cost?

For a 30-foot boat in a Great Lakes market, budget roughly as follows for a five-month season.

Those are Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota numbers. Expect 15% to 30% more around Chicago, Traverse City and the Wisconsin Door Peninsula, where indoor space is genuinely scarce.

The gap between the cheapest and dearest option on a 30-footer is about $3,200 a season. Over ten years, $32,000, which is a meaningful fraction of the boat.

So the question is what that money buys.

What freeze-thaw actually does

Water expands about 9% when it freezes. In a northern winter a boat does not freeze once, it freezes and thaws somewhere between forty and eighty times, and every cycle drives that expansion into any micro-crack that holds moisture.

The damage shows up in predictable places:

  • Gelcoat crazing radiating from cleats, stanchion bases and rail fittings, where the laminate flexes and moisture sits.
  • Deck core saturation where a fitting has ever leaked. One wet season is survivable. Sixty freeze cycles turns a damp core into a delaminated one.
  • Vinyl and upholstery stiffening and then splitting at the seams, because plasticisers migrate faster under thermal cycling.
  • Window and hatch seals losing compliance, which starts the next leak.

Heated storage does not stop any of this by magic. It stops it by holding the boat above freezing so the cycle never runs.

Where shrink-wrap actually earns its money

Shrink-wrap is genuinely good at what it does. A properly framed wrap sheds two feet of wet snow, keeps the cockpit dry, and stops five months of ultraviolet exposure on the gelcoat and canvas.

What it does not do is control temperature, and it does one thing badly that people rarely account for: if it is not vented properly, it traps moisture and grows mould on everything soft inside. Vents every eight to ten feet, and a proper ridge frame rather than the boat's own bimini as a support.

The other honest problem is waste. A 30-foot wrap is around 300 pounds of single-use polyethylene, replaced annually. Some yards now recycle it. Most do not.

When does heated storage pay for itself?

Not always. Here is where I think the line sits.

Heated is worth it for boats with large glass areas, extensive soft goods, teak decks, or complex interiors — so express cruisers, downeast boats, anything with a real cabin, and anything wooden. It is also worth it for boats over roughly $250,000, where a 5% resale difference exceeds the ten-year cost difference outright.

Unheated indoor is the sweet spot for most mid-size fibreglass boats. You get the UV protection and the snow protection and you avoid the wrap cost every year, at roughly the price of wrapping plus a bit.

Outdoor with shrink-wrap is entirely sensible for outboard-powered fishing boats, aluminium hulls, pontoons and anything where the interior is designed to get wet. A center console does not care about a Michigan winter nearly as much as a Sea Ray does.

Where outdoor genuinely fails is on the boat somebody is planning to sell in three years. Which brings us to the part nobody mentions.

Storage invoices are a condition report

This is the argument that surprises owners, and it is the reason we ask for storage receipts on every northern listing.

A Great Lakes buyer looking at two identical 2018 boats will pay more for the one with five consecutive indoor storage invoices. Not because indoor storage is glamorous, but because those invoices prove three separate things at once: the boat was hauled every year, somebody paid attention every year, and there is a continuous ownership record with no unexplained gaps.

A gap in the storage record is a question. Where was the boat in the winter of 2022? Occasionally the answer is "in a slip in Charleston," and that reframes the freshwater-only claim entirely.

Keep every invoice. It is free, and it is worth several thousand dollars at sale.

What has to be winterized regardless

Storage type does not change this list. Do all of it, or pay somebody to.

  1. 01Engine cooling. Drain the block and run non-toxic antifreeze through the raw-water circuit until it runs pink at the exhaust.
  2. 02Fuel. Fill to about 95%, add stabiliser, and run it long enough to reach the injectors. A near-full tank leaves little room for condensation.
  3. 03Oil and filters. Change before storage, not after. Used oil is acidic and you do not want it sitting in a block for five months.
  4. 04Freshwater and head systems. Drain, then antifreeze. A cracked head pump in April is an avoidable irritation.
  5. 05Batteries. Off the boat, on a maintainer, somewhere above freezing. A flat battery freezes at about 20°F; a charged one does not freeze until far below anything Michigan produces.
  6. 06Ballast systems, if you have them. Purge the low points properly. Same plumbing that causes trouble at an invasive species inspection causes trouble in a freeze.

Heated storage tempts people to skip steps three through five. Do not. Heating fails, and it always fails on the coldest weekend of the year when the yard is closed.

The short version

If the boat is fibreglass, outboard-powered, and used hard, wrap it and put it outside. If it has a cabin you sleep in, get it indoors. If it is worth more than a quarter of a million dollars or has any wood in it, heat it and treat the cost as insurance rather than storage.

And keep the paperwork either way, because five years from now it is worth more than the receipt suggests.
