The 65-Foot Problem: Air Draft on the Intracoastal Waterway
Sixty-five feet is a design standard, not a promise. A handful of bridges come in lower, and they decide which boats can make the run south.

Every autumn a fleet of boats leaves the Chesapeake heading south, and every autumn a handful of them turn around somewhere in North Carolina because the owner trusted a number.
The number is sixty-five feet. It is printed on charts, quoted in brochures, and repeated on forums as though it were a law of physics. It is a design standard for fixed bridges, and the ICW does not honour it everywhere.
What is the bridge clearance on the Intracoastal Waterway?
The Atlantic ICW is built to a nominal 65 feet of vertical clearance at mean high water for fixed bridges. Two things undermine that in practice.
First, some bridges were built before the standard or under an exception, and are charted lower. Second, mean high water is an average. A spring tide, a sustained onshore wind, or heavy rain upstream can put the actual water level a foot or more above the charted datum, and every inch of that comes off your clearance.
The gauge boards on the bridge pilings show real-time clearance. They are the only number that matters, and they are the number people ignore because they have already committed to the approach.

The Wilkerson is the famous one. It sits in a canal with no realistic bypass, it is charted at roughly 64 feet, and the gauge often reads less after rain. Boats with 62 or 63 feet of air draft arrive believing they are fine and find they are not.
Julia Tuttle is a different problem. At around 56 feet it is simply impassable for most sailing yachts, which is why the ICW effectively ends at Fort Lauderdale for tall rigs and the last leg to Miami is done outside.
How to measure your own air draft honestly
Builders quote air draft the way car makers quote fuel economy. Do your own.
- 01Load the boat as you will cruise it — full fuel, full water, gear aboard. A cruising-loaded boat sits lower and gains clearance, which helps, but you want the real waterline.
- 02Measure from the waterline to the top of the highest fixed structure.
- 03Add the VHF whip. Then add the wind instrument, the anchor light, and the radar dome if it sits above the masthead.
- 04Add six inches of honesty.
- 05Write the number on a card and tape it inside a locker.
That last step sounds silly and it is the most useful thing in this article. At the bridge, at eight in the morning, with a following current and a tug coming the other way, you do not want to be doing arithmetic.
The tide window
If your air draft is within about two feet of a charted clearance, you are a tide-planning boat, not a schedule boat. Low water gains you clearance; high water takes it away. The trouble is that on much of the ICW you also need water under the keel, and the two requirements pull in opposite directions.
A five-foot-draft boat with a 63-foot rig in Georgia is solving a genuinely awkward optimisation problem twice a day.
The other constraint: controlling depth
Air draft gets the attention. Depth quietly ends more trips.
The project depth for the Atlantic ICW is 12 feet across much of its length. The controlling depth — what is actually there after shoaling — is frequently 7 to 9 feet, and in known trouble spots in Georgia and southern North Carolina it drops below 6 at low water.
Anything drawing more than about 5 feet should treat the ICW as a tide-dependent route rather than a road. The Army Corps publishes surveys, cruisers' associations publish crowd-sourced depth reports, and both are more current than the chart.
What this means when you are buying
This is where air draft becomes a purchase decision rather than a navigation one, and it is not obvious to first-time buyers.
A sailboat with a 62-foot air draft can run the whole Atlantic ICW with care. The same design with a taller rig, at 66 feet, cannot, and its owner will spend the rest of its life making offshore hops from Beaufort to Charleston in whatever weather November provides. That is a materially different boat to own, and the brochure will not tell you so.
Shoal draft matters just as much in the other direction. The Island Packet 439 we list at 4 feet 10 inches of draft can sit in places a 7-foot fin keel cannot, and on the South Atlantic coast that opens up a genuinely different set of anchorages.
So if you intend to run the ditch, two numbers belong in your shortlist criteria before anything about the interior: air draft under 63 feet, draft under 5 feet. Everything else is preference.
